LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES, GAME #5, SEASON 8 - Phillies 2, Dodgers 1 (10 innings, 12 minutes) - The Phillies are the 2025 United Federation of Baseball champions, winning the LCS in 5 games over Los Angeles. For the second consecutive game, extra innings were needed. With the Los Angeles bullpen depleted, manager Mark Ash moved scheduled starter Landon Knack to the bullpen, and tabbed Yoshinobu Yamamoto as the starting pitcher.
And Los Angeles scored first against Phillies starter ZACH WHEELER. In the bottom of the 3rd, Wheeler walked Andy Pages, gave up a single to Miguel Rojas, and walked Gavin Lux, and suddenly Los Angeles had the bases loaded with nobody out. Wheeler then struck out Shohei Ohtani. Next, Mookie Betts grounded into a 6-4 force play, with Pages scoring from third and giving Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. Wheeler then struck out Freddie Freeman to end the inning.
In the top of the 6th, J.T. Realmuto led off with a single. Yamamoto then struck out Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott, but Johan Rojas doubled to center, scoring Realmuto from first with the tying run. In the top of the 7th, Knack took over in relief of Yamamoto. For his 6 innings of work, Yamamoto gave up just that 1 run on 7 hits, while walking 5 and striking out 8.
In the bottom of the 8th, Wheeler gave up a lead off double to Gavin Lux. Matt Strahm replaced Wheeler on the mound, striking out Ohtani and Betts, intentionally walking Freeman, and getting Teoscar to ground out to end the inning. Wheeler allowed just 3 hits in 7+ innings, walking 4 and striking out 5.
Knack held the Phillies scoreless until the 10th when, with 2 otu and nobody on, Realmuto homered. In the bottom of the 10th, Strahm struck out pinch-hitter Austin Barnes but then walked Ohtani. Jeff Hoffman took over, getting both Betts and Freeman to ground out, getting the save and giving the Phillies the UFB championship! Strahm got the win, Knack got the loss. The Phillies won with 10 hits, stranding 13 runners and going 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Los Angeles managed only 3 hits off Wheeler, with no hits against Strahm or Hoffman, and were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding 8 baserunners. Despite the loss in the LCS, Los Angeles manager Mark Ash deserves kudos for a fine season.
ZACH WHEELER is the Post-Season MVP. In 4 starts (2 vs the Blue Sox, 2 vs Los Angeles), he was 2-0 with 32 strikeouts in 30.2 innings, with an ERA of 0.88 and a WHIP of 0.72. Wheeler held opposing batters to just .124 (13-for-105). Congratulations to Phillies manager JIM HOLLAND and interim manager BRIAN FISCHEL!
