League Championship Series, Game #6 - Houston 4, Atlanta 3 (12 minutes)
United Federation of Baseball League Championship Series, Game #6 - Houston 4, Atlanta 3 (12 minutes). A 2-out, 2-run walkoff homer by Astros secondbaseman Jose Altuve capped an astonishing (almost implausible!) 9th inning, knotting the series at 3 games apiece and forcing a 7th game. Until the bottom of the 7th inning, this was a scoreless pitchers' duel between the Astros' Luis Garcia and Atlanta's Kyle Wright. In the bottom of the 7th, Wright got Jeremy Pena to fly out to left, and then got Michael Brantley to ground out to second. But Wright then walked the next 2 batters, Chas McCormick and Christian Vazquez, and Atlanta sent Bryce Elder to the mound to face Altuve. Altuve hit a grounder to Orlando Arcia at second, but Arcia mishandled the ball. That was Arcia's second error of the game, and the bases were now loaded with 2 out. The next batter, Yuli Gurriel, singled to score McCormick and Vazquez, and the Astros now led 2-0. In the 8th inning, Garcia retired 3 straight Atlanta batters, and Elder retired 3 straight Astros batters, so the game went to the top of the 9th with the Astros up 2-0. Michael Harris led off the top of the 9th with a single, and that was all for Garcia. Astros reliever Hector Neris took the hill, and immediately threw a wild pitch that sent Harris to second. But Neris then struck out Ronald Acuna and Matt Olson, and Atlanta was down to their final out. It was now all up to Dansby Swanson, the UFB regular season MVP, and Swanson came through with a single to score Harris from second. Atlanta was still down 2-1, and the Astros pulled Neris and brought in Ryan Pressly to face Austin Riley. Riley homered [dice roll 2-8, HR 1-16, 2B 17-20, card 1] and Atlanta now led 3-2. Pressly got Travis D'Arnaud to line out to third, but Atlanta was now 3 outs away from victory. In the bottom of the 9th, Tyler Matzek took the hill to try to close it out for Atlanta. He retired Brantley and McCormick, and Atlanta was now 1 out away from winning the championship. But Matzek gave up a double to Vazquez, and with the tying run on second and Altuve coming to the plate, Atlanta turned to Kenley Jansen (who already had 5 saves in the post-season). But Altuve homered [dice roll 2-11, HR 1-9, flyball 10-20, card 6] to give the Astros a very dramatic victory. It now all comes down to Game #7 at Minute Maid Park. Cristian Javier, the UFB regular season Cy Young Award winner (but 0-3 with a 4.15 ERA in the post-season) will start for the Astros, and Spencer Strider will pitch for Atlanta.
