Semifinal Series "B," Game #5 - Chicago 5, Tampa Bay 2.
Jose Abreu was the star of Game #5, hitting 2 homeruns and knocking in all 5 of Chicago’s runs. With this victory, Chicago (CM created by Bill Sorenson) takes a 3 games to 2 lead over Tampa Bay (CM created by Jim Holland), and is just 1 victory away from meeting the Blue Jays (CM created by Rob Tomlinson). The Game #5 pitching matchup was a repeat of the Game #1 pitching matchup: Carlos Rodon for Chicago and Shane McClanahan for Tampa Bay. In the top of the 1st, Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead when, after 2 were out, Mike Zunino reached on an error by Rodon, moved to second on a single by Nelson Cruz, and scored on a single by Yandy Diaz. But it didn’t take long for Chicago to tie it up as Abreu homered off McClanahan to lead off the bottom of the 2nd. In the top of the 6th, Wander Franco led off with a single, and with Zunino at the plate, Franco went to second on Rodon’s wild pitch. That was all for Rodon, who was replaced by Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel walked Zunino, struck out Cruz, and walked Diaz. That loaded the bases with 1 out. Kimbrel departed and was relieved by Aaron Bummer, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Kevin Kiermaier to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead. That’s how the score stood as Chicago came to bat in the bottom of the 8th with Tampa Bay reliever Collin McHugh, who had entered the game during the 7th inning, on the mound. Nick Madrigal reached on an error by Tampa Bay thirdbaseman Joey Wendle, and Dietrich Enns replaced McHugh. Enns walked Tim Anderson, and then Leury Garcia bunted the runners over to second and third. With Luis Robert due up and Abreu on deck, Tampa Bay elected to have Enns intentionally walk Robert. Now with 1 out and the bases loaded, Drew Rasmussen replaced Enns – and Abreu took him downtown for a grand slam homer to made in 5-2 Chicago. Liam Hendriks pitched the top of the 9th and got the save. The win went to Jose Ruiz, who was the pitcher of record when Abreu hit his slam. Enns was charged with the loss. Interestingly, each team managed only 4 hits in this game. The scene now shifts back to Tampa Bay for Game #6 and (if necessary) Game #7.

First baseman Jose Abreu ripped 2 homeruns as the Chicago White Sox topped the
Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 5 to 2 at Guaranteed Rate Fld.
Abreu provided much of the offense. He clubbed a solo home run in the 2nd
inning and electrified the crowd with a Grand Slam home run in the 8th
inning. Both teams totaled 4 hits on the afternoon.
The win was credited to Jose Ruiz(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
Liam Hendriks recorded the save, his 2nd. Dietrich Enns(0-1) was charged
with the loss in relief.
