Championship Series, Game #7 - Houston 10, Minnesota 5
Championship Series, Game #7 - Houston 10, Minnesota 5. For the second time in three seasons, the Houston Astros (CM created by Curtis Milbourn) are champions. Game #7 was a tight ballgame, with the lead going back and forth - until a dramatic 8th inning grand slam homerun by Aledmys Diaz off Minnesota reliever Sam Dyson. Neither starting pitcher lasted very long. Minnesota starter Michael Pineda lasted only 2-2/3 innings and gave up 3 runs in the top of the 3rd as Diaz singled, Josh Reddick hit a 2-run homer, George Springer doubled, and Michael Brantley singled to score Springer. Houston's 3-0 lead didn't last very long, and neither did Houston starter Zack Greinke. With 1 out in the bottom of the 4th, Greinke walked Max Kepler, gave up a 2-run homer to Miguel Sano, and then was tagged sor a solo homer by Nelson Cruz that tied the game at 3-3. Next, Jake Cave singled. Then, Jorge Polanco hit a tough grounder that Houston shortstop Jose Altuve could not handle. Cave scored with Minnesota's 4th run, and Polanco wound up on thirdbase on a wild throw by Altuve. Mitch Garver's sacrifice fly scored Polanco and Minnesota led 5-3. Greinke finished the 4th inning, but he was replaced by Jose Urquidy, who would remain on the mound for the rest of the game. Urquidy would pitch 5 scoreless innings, giving up just 1 hit, walking none, and striking out 6. In the top of the 5th, Minnesota reliever Tyler Duffey gave up a homer by George Springer, and the Minnesota lead was cut to 5-4. In the top of the 6th, Brantley led off with a singled and then Duffey gave up a 2-run homer to Yordan Alvarez. Houston now led 6-5, and Sergio Romo replaced Duffey. There would be no further scoring until the 8th inning when, with 1 out, Romo gave up a double to Brantley, walked Alvarez, and Yuli Gurriel singled to load the bases. Romo was pulled and replaced by Dyson, and the first batter he faced was Diaz, whose grand slam homer made the score 10-5 in Houston's favor. That's the way the game (and the series) would end. Urquidy got the win, pitching the last 5 innings in relief, and Duffey was charged with the loss. Michael Brantley, who went 3-for-4, was named Post-Season MVP. Over the 4-game sweep of Chicago and the 7-game series against Minnesota, Brantley hit .370 (with a slugging average of .681 and an OPS of 1.061), leading all post-season players with 11 rbis, playing a key part in many Houston rallies, and leading Houston with 17 hits in 11 games. Previous Post-Season MVPs were Houston's Dallas Keuchel of Blue Sox Season #1 (2017 MLB rosters) and Max Muncy of Los Angeles in Blue Sox Season #2 (2018 MLB rosters). This is Houston's second league championship; they were the champions in Blue Sox Season #1, and have now recaptured the crown after being knocked out in the Semifinal Series in Blue Sox Season #2 by eventual champions Los Angeles. Congratulations to Curtis Milbourn, Michael Brantley, and all the Astros for a great victory. Kudos are also due Tom Perella, who created the Minnesota CM, guided them to a first place finish in the regular season, and (after falling behind Houston 3 games to 1) won Games #5 and #6 to force a 7th game. Blue Sox Season #3 is now in the books, but (after an off-season of a few weeks) stand by for news about Blue Sox Season #4 (2020 MLB rosters).
