Blue Sox Game #52 - Blue Sox 7, Oakland 6 (18 minutes). Derek Dietrich's bases loaded walkoff triple in the bottom of the 9th resulted in one of the most dramatic Blue Sox victories ever. Oakland and the Blue Sox entered this game, the first of a 3-game series, tied for 5th place (only the top 5 teams make the playoffs). The starting pitchers for the series opener were Brett Anderson for Oakland and Matt Strahm for the Blue Sox. In the top of the 3rd, Oakland took a 4-0 lead on Ramon Laureano's rbi single and a 3-run homer by Matt Olson. In the bottom of the 4th, Blue Sox thirdbaseman Maikel Franco homered to make it 4-1 Oakland. There would be no more scoring until the top of the 8th, when Oakland thirdbaseman Matt Chapman homered off of Blue Sox reliever Alex Colome to put Oakland up 5-1. The home crowd of 37,982 were decidely quiet and the mood was gloomy. But in the bottom of the 8th, Tim Beckham's 2-out 2-run double cut Oakland's lead to 5-3 - and that was all for Brett Anderson, who was replaced by Liam Hendriks. The first batter to face Hendriks was pinch-hitter Cesar Hernandez who doubled, scoring Beckham and narrowing the gap to 5-4. In the top of the 9th, Kirby Yates took the hill for the Blue Sox, striking out the first two batter but then walking Marcus Semien. The next batter was Laureano, who slashed a single to right that was misplayed by Blue Sox rightfielder Danny Santana. Semien scored, Laureano wound up on thirdbase, and Oakland now led 6-4. The bottom of the 9th started out inauspiciously for the Blue Sox as Hendriks got Tucker Barnhart to ground out to short. Nick Ahmed was due up next, but Blue Sox manager Dave Bristol sent J.B. Shuck up to pinch-hit. Shuck singled, and then Trey Mancini also singled (his third hit of the game), moving Shuck to third. Next, Hendriks hit Santana with a pitch to load the bases and put the winning run on firstbase. The next scheduled batter was Franco, but Bristol sent up Dietrich - the last available position player on the Blue Sox active roster - to hit for Franco. Dietrich belted a drive down the rightfield line [2-7, TRIPLE 1-3, flyball(B) 4-20] and it eluded Oakland rightfielder Stephen Piscotty, and [with a split of 2] all 3 runners scored, Dietrich wound up on third with a triple and a 7-6 Blue Sox victory! Yates got the win, Hendriks got the loss, the Blue Sox are (at least for now) in sole possession of 5th place, 1 game ahead of Oakland.

The hometown crowd was rewarded with a dramatic ending, as the New York (FL)
Blue Sox staged a comeback win over the Oakland Athletics by the count of 7
to 6.
New York (FL) won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3
base hits. After an out was recorded, J.B. Shuck got things rolling when he
laced a base-hit. Trey Mancini next to the plate and he lined a single.
Danny Santana then was hit by a pitch. Derek Dietrich was up next and he
tripled making New York (FL) the victors to the delight of the home town
faithful. New York (FL) had 12 hits for the afternoon.
Kirby Yates(6-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Liam Hendriks(1-3)
was hit with the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs and 4 hits in 2/3 of an
inning.
'Wow, that was fun!', Yates said following the game. 'Once in a while you
play a game that reminds you just why you got into this business to begin
with!'
