Blue Sox starter Jordan Lyles struck out 10 men in 6-2/3 innings and an early Blue Sox lead held up when Alex Colome held Oakland scoreless for the final 2 innings. Marcus Semien led off the game with a homer to put Oakland up 1-0, but the Blue Sox responded with a 2-run single by Trey Mancini in the 1st and an rbi double by Derek Dietrich in the 2nd. It was now Blue Sox up by a score of 3-1. Oakland starter Tanner Roark would not give up another run, and an rbi single by Josh Phegley in the 7th narrowed the margin to 3-2 Blue Sox, but that's the way it would end. Lyles got the win, Roark was the losing pitcher, and Colome was credited with a save. Oakland rightfielder Stephen Piscotty was injured and will miss the next 10 games. Derek Dietrich's bases loaded walkoff triple in the bottom of the 9th resulted in one of the most dramatic Blue Sox victories ever. Oakland and the Blue Sox entered this game, the first of a 3-game series, tied for 5th place (only the top 5 teams make the playoffs). The starting pitchers for the series opener were Brett Anderson for Oakland and Matt Strahm for the Blue Sox. In the top of the 3rd, Oakland took a 4-0 lead on Ramon Laureano's rbi single and a 3-run homer by Matt Olson.
